They make caffeinated Vitamin Water now, which is like the universe going "hm, what is the one thing on Earth Heidi would be most unable to resist" and then giving it to me. Except! It makes me jitterier than coffee, which is weird, 'cause it's less caffeinated. Also, it's obnoxiously delicious. Goddamit, Vitamin Water.

Today is All My Stupid Ships Are Validated day, with Joe tweeting Pete Wentz and the Butcher writing a song about "three beautiful brothers".

(My fannishness is based on the ability to do a whole lot of reaching, ok, shut up)

I actually did some writing yesterday? Of course none of it was on the [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti fic I keep kicking my own ass about not writing yet, but Kevin Jonas/Shaun White and The Epic Friendship of Bill Beckett and Demi Lovato are necessary to life, ok.

If I can figure out who would be Gwen, I think my [livejournal.com profile] jb_bigbang fic'll be a Kevron Merlin AU. KEVIN IS THE IDEAL MERLIN, okay, and I'm not just saying that because this is maybe the sixth time I've tried to shoehorn one of my fandoms into Merlin.

Except I want Nick to be Uther and that makes the least sense in the entire world. WHATEVER, I HAVE TIME.

I keep waffling on whether or not this is gonna end up in the finished fic, so here, have some adorbs JWalk/Kevin studycuddles )

I really want to get my [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti fic done this weekend, which means I've written several hundred words today but none in that fic. Also none of those several hundred were in the ficlet meme fics that I also wanted to do this weekend. WHATEV.

I'm not big on NJATA's album, at all, but I haven't made it through the whole thing yet, so who knows. IDK. I kind of assumed I wouldn't, though, so.

Hey, universe, where is all the Nicole Anderson/Cassadee Pope fic? I mean, the world needs more Nicole fic in general, but, y'know, adorable lesbians

Just a quick reminder that the [livejournal.com profile] help_haiti auctions are closing tomorrow at noon, EST (here's a countdown if you don't want to bother with a time zone conversion).

My fic auction is here, [livejournal.com profile] jb_fic has a post for people to link their own auctions here, and [personal profile] hermitsoul has compiled a list of Bandom fic/art offers here.

[livejournal.com profile] help_haiti is "...a place for fandomers to help raise money to help in the rescues, recoveries and rebuilding of Haiti following the tragic earthquake on January 12, 2010." People can offer up words (fic, poetry, beta-ing/editing services, etc.), audio (editing services, podfic, etc.), food, graphics, art, or "interesting things" not covered by the more specific categories; your bid is a promised donation to any one of a number of charities.

I'm offering fic for a variety of fandoms here, and for JoBros people, [livejournal.com profile] jb_fic has a post for people to link their own auctions here.

Offer yourself up, bid on some shit, and promote well and often!

I hate being hungover. I used to be able to prevent it, but since I drank three and a half bottles of water last night (plus a glass at [livejournal.com profile] truemajority's) and took a double dose of Excedrin before sleep, and have still been completely incapacitated all day, I appear to have lost the knack.

As in, it's five o'clock and I just now felt good enough to go get my car, after sleeping all day. (And man, work tomorrow's probably gonna suck; what're the chances I'll get anything resembling a decent night's sleep after sleeping all day?)

Bah.

I've hit that point where I can't tell if I'm all woozy and unsteady because I'm still sick, and thus eating would be a bad idea, or if it's because I've only eaten two slices of artichoke pie and a handful of cookies in the past two days, and thus eating would solve all my problems. My tummy is rumbling, so I'm taking my chances with some Wheat Thins.

I'm trying to write a Jonas Brothers primer specifically for Bandom people who've come in through stuff like Mike/Kevin and the JoBros-on-Warped-Tour fic and don't necessarily need the thoroughness of the Jonas U series but might like to stop being confused by every name they read. It's not happening, though. Oh well.

Yuletide signups are open, and there are a number of nominated fandoms relevant to my flist's interest: 17 Again, Hairspray, JONAS, Leverage, Disney RPF (KEVROOOON), High School Musical RPF, Wizards of Waverly Place. So go sign up and improve my chances of getting Kevron this year.

My mom is making my sister's prom dress out of red satin. I've been claiming all the remnants (there are quite a few; she misread the pattern and bought the yardage based on a 45-inch bolt, not a 58-inch) and fully intend to turn one of my Ken dolls (I am pretty sure there's no one reading this who doesn't know about my Barbie thing, but hi) into Arthur Pendragon (I have already dubbed him Arthur Kendragon, because I'm witty like that). I have all sorts of horifically tacky plans for making terribly cheesy armor out of pretty silver fabric.

I am such a dooooooooork.

In related news, the pattern is a 50s dress and I am going to dress my sister up like Betty Draper if it kills me. This would be easier if she hadn't decided five or six years ago that my taste in everything sucks.

(What's funny about that is, at the time she decided my taste was bad because I was in love with neon and animal print [shocking, yes?]. Which are now her two favorite things. Yet, somehow, I still have no taste. BUT I WILL ACCOMPLISH THIS MISSION no matter who I have to enlist)

So is there a word for something that isn't exactly canon but is WAY TOO FUCKING BLATANT to be labeled subtext?

Because I need that word for all the slash in Merlin OMG. SO GAY I love it omg. And so cracky NEED MOAR NOW.

Also why do like half the ships I came away with involve Uther. I LIKE HIM MORE THAN I EXPECTED idk.

Must go find fic now. After throwing myself at [livejournal.com profile] fizzyblogic's feet for squeeing me into the show because SO MUCH GAY CRACK OMG <3

I've made my third (afaik) appearance in wank_report:

http://www.journalfen.net/community/wank_report/518.html?thread=3318534#t3318534

although I'm not sure the second one counts, there was some big who_anon wank that was apparently set off by a post I made in FFR but that post wasn't particularly important to the overall wank.

BUT ANYWAY. Maybe this time I'll make it to the BIG LEAGUES whoo.

[PS I didn't mean to disappear like I have; everything kind of sucks right now and I've been trying to find the strength to actually talk about it but apparently I don't have that. So...whatever. Unimportant fandom crap, hi.]

[I didn't provide the larger context of the massive racefail happening right now in my last post because it was so much about that individual fail, but I feel that a) it's an important conversation and b) it's easy to get lost in the massive sea of links out there and decide the signal-to-noise ratio is too unfavorable for you. Much thanks to [livejournal.com profile] wistfuljane for providing so much summary in handy easy-to-copy form]

What is RaceFail '09? [livejournal.com profile] daedala provided the shortest summary of RaceFail '09 here and it is as followed:
1. Bear writes a post about how to write the Other
2. Avalon's Willow critiques one of her books on racial tropes
3. Bear agrees unequivocally in writing
4. Commenters defend Bear in increasingly racist language.
5. Massive fail all over the internets.
6. Bear says that she was lying in 3. in order to model appropriate conversation.
But [livejournal.com profile] daedala's summary barely scratches the surface. Here are other more detailed, but still brief summaries of events: )

Although the initial post frustrated the fuck out of me and hit several knee-jerk buttons at once, I was actually enjoying the comments in [livejournal.com profile] gerriwritinglog's Racism, RaceFail '09, and the Meme post. There were lots of excellent informative comments there, a few comments from the OP that made me less ragey, and some useful conversations were happening.

Obviously, that could not be allowed to continue.

I want to respond to the shutdown comment, but first there are a few threads I want to call attention to:

* [livejournal.com profile] leana106 on the difference between "black and proud" and "white pride"

* [livejournal.com profile] sinsense, who consistently brings the awesome in that post, about the importance of deferring to someone whose knowledge of the subject is greater than your own

* [livejournal.com profile] sleepingfear, also ridiculously awesome, posts an excellent video clip and a good explanation of the problem with "color-blind" in this thread.

There's plenty more good stuff, but those are the specifics that stood out to me as I was reading/participating.

And just for context, my response to/conversation with the OP.

ETA: [livejournal.com profile] gerriwritinglog disabled comments, effectively deleting everything (and rendering my links pointless). But the Firefox cache is a beautiful thing, I've got a screenshot here, all comments unfolded. I'm keeping the links on the off chance she de-disables.

Son of ETA: She's de-disabled; I'm keeping the screenshot linked anyway.

As far as shutting down goes...well.

"Now, thanks to a couple much appreciated commenters, I have something to continue my growth with."

...

"I have a couple characters who are just as self-righteous as I came off in my OP. The reactions that you, the commenters, gave me help ENORMOUSLY in clarifying how these characters will act and react, as well as the people who will work to change them."

Okay, folks, you have served your purpose, now kindly run along. I've learned all I've decided I need to, please get the fuck out.

That may only bother me because of the reason I like debating/discussing/etc. on LJ - because the conversations aren't only about the people having them, they're about all the unseen readers who might come along tomorrow, a month from now, a year from now, and see something that makes them go "...ohhhhhh, that's it; I get it now".

When you post something publicly, especially when it ends up somewhere like [livejournal.com profile] metafandom where it will attract a buttload of people who don't know you and don't care - they're drawn by the topic, not the poster - it's really not entirely about you. It becomes about the commenters and the readers as well; to shut it down because you, specifically, don't feel you have anything more to gain, you're taking something that developed beyond you and closing it back in again; you're depriving the people who do have more to gain from the conversations that were benefiting them.

All of which, I suppose, any given individual has the right to do when he or she controls the space. Perhaps I'm just bothered by how blatant the "whatever else you think you have to teach me doesn't matter, because I've learned it all now" attitude is.

And that's not even what really bothered me.

I would ask that if you take away one thing from this thread, it's that it's not enough to say "You don't understand." Follow up with "Let me tell you about what happened to me." Racism, to white people, is very often dealt with in the abstract. Making the problem concrete with a real example makes a difference to those struggling to understand.

This, immediately after this:

It's no one's duty to bare their souls to you for your own education, which is what you're asking when you expect someone to follow up "you don't understand the specific issues I face as a POC" with "and here's what they all are". You're saying "I want you to take something that has caused you pain, or shame, or harm, and I want you to write about it, relive it, and I want you to put it out there for public consumption where people will question it, pull it apart, demand to know more, and I want you to do all this so I can learn".

There are explanations out there, there are people who have chosen to educate, to turn elements of their life into a learning experience for white people. Every time, or nearly every time, there's a blowout over racism in fandom, it's because someone has chosen to speak up about the specific way in which she, as a POC, has been made to feel uncomfortable, out of place, like a lesser person because of the multitude of problems with race so prevalent in fandom. When those so often end so badly, I'm certainly not going to be the one to blame POC for not wanting to put their hardships out there for white people to pull apart.

[livejournal.com profile] deepad's I Didn't Dream of Dragons post at the genesis of this latest conversation is one of those - look at how big this has gotten, how many people have gotten hurt, all the consequences, and understand that when you say "explain this to me" you're asking someone to risk all that for your benefit.

Any faith I had that the OP truly learned from the experience, that she took all those attempts to educate her to heart, flew right out the window when all she had to say to "it's nobody's job to educate you" was "thanks for the education, and remember, it's everyone's job to teach me shit".

Maybe she locked down too early.

Here's a fun quiz that I expect my entire FList to pass.

Person A: "It's not creepy to portray a fictional character doing what you want them to do--they don't have free will, not really. They're puppets. Real people aren't puppets."

Person B: "I don't have the power to make [celebrity] do a damn thing, I can't interfere with his free will in any way.

A character is a character. Whatever inspires him, whatever elements are pulled from reality to create him, however closely he resembles a real living breathing person, he is not a living breathing person."

Just two questions, both count equally. Show your work.

1. Which of these people is an RPFer? (This one's a bit of a gimme, I think)

2. Which of these people appears to have the blurriest line between fantasy and reality?

Answers Under the Cut )
nicole anderson, b&w, big hair
I really, really have a hard time grasping the amount of distaste for RPF in fandom when shit like this exists.

If the user prefers to leave their spouse out of the book and replace him/her with a celebrity, it’s completely up to them.

Every fandom needs a Rockfic because OMG I hate trying to get into new fandoms. Everybody centralize yourselves, plz, because hunting down communities and then trying to figure out where to post and how much crossposting is too much (not to mention having to friend 8 bajillion comms if I want to actually read fic, and my intense grammar snobbery getting in the way because omg no quality controoool) is kind of a pain in the ass.

Pick a number 1 - 539, gimme a pairing, and I'll write you something. It might be cracktacular, but it'll be something ;)

I knew I wouldn't remember to do this every day.

Yesterday's Christmas Eve service at church was lovely. Hard, but I'm glad we went rather than hiding at home. The part we knew was going to be hardest - Angels We Have Heard on High, which was the last hymn at my aunt's funeral - wasn't so bad at all, for a couple reasons: rather than a hymn for the congregation, it was performed by the little kids' choir, and it is hard to be sad with a bunch of 5- and 6-year-olds totally not knowing the verses but belting the fuck out of the GLO-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-RIA part; secondly, it was followed by Joy to the World, which has been a massive family in-joke since my dad spaced out and belted out a JOY when...no one was supposed to be joy-ing. And I do mean belted. It was nice.

And Christmas has been wonderful. We did a no-present Christmas, out of necessity, and it was nice. Dinner was fabulous, and my Dad got everyone 10 lottery tickets...and every single one of us won something. My mom, who thought she'd gotten the least, misread the directions and almost threw away $30 worth of tickets. We actually came out ahead - $64 from $50 worth of tickets. And we made quite a lovely holiday tableau, frantically scratching off tickets around the table.

Also, between yesterday and today, I got my Yuletide story and OMGSOAWESOME. I was...worried I'd be disappointed if someone wrote my last choice...but someone did and disappointment is the last thing on my mind. If you're into Mad Men (which you all SHOULD BE) go check out Split Run, a wonderful FABULOUS Sal/Ken fic.

So I just did a lesser version of this, but I like this one (snagged from [livejournal.com profile] screwthedaisies) WAY better.

Name a character from one of my fandoms, and I'll give you either (a) three facts about them from my personal canon/fanon, (b) a reason he/she sucks, (c) a reason he/she is awesomecakes, (d) five things that never happened to that character or (e) five people that character never fell in love with and why. You pick the character. I pick the letter.

To make this even moar exciting for myself, I'll be rolling a dice to pick the letter.
