So after my "this is why I avoid discussing feminism" post the other day, [livejournal.com profile] chime made a follow-up post.

Interesting discussion was had by all. But, what's that, an enjoyable, educational discussion of feminism? The Ignorance Fairy can't let that slide.

here's my favorite thread, which culminates in the Best Post Evar.

I don't know if you intend to come across as so incredibly arrogant, but the irony of being lectured on not considering my experience to mean everyone's experience by someone who is wandering around with such a huge chip on their shoulder amuses me immensely.

Just because the nasty men have made your life harder, doesn't mean there's some big male conspiracy against poor, weak, helpless women. Have you ever considered trying to live your life without blaming your shortcomings on men? If I seem to lack respect for your myth of victimhood, it's because I've seen the harm that kind of thing can do to young girls, who don't try, because people like you have told them men will stop them anyway.

I'm sure there are sexist people in this world, men and women. What I don't believe in is the idea that women are weaker than men and so need special help to overcome sexism and the idea that men are somehow involved in a conspiracy against us. Try, just once, to imagine that your dislike of men may be based solely on your own experience and doesn't necessarily reflect reality. But I suppose you won't, because clinging to victim status means you never have to take responsibility.

And then there's this, a delightful enlightening fucking irritating discussion of privilege.

Oh Ignorance Fairy. Shine on, you crazy diamond.

and yeah. It's people like this that are gonna turn me into a radical feminist stereotype-caricature.

Indeed. I tend not to think of myself as a radical anything, but oh hell I've seen/witnessed/had to deal with sexism so much in my life (from the moment I was born and had to be smuggled into this country) that certain things just make my blood boil.

takanji is awesome. She's got a blog (http://blog.shrub.com/), which is equally awesome.

I DID NOT KNOW U WERE A VICTIMZ WHOSE LIFE IS BEING HELD DOWN BY TEH MENZZ CONSPIRACY!!!!

I didn't either! Here I am working to fix my shortcomings and I could've been blaming men the whole time. DAMNIT.

The "big meanie men" viewpoint is one reason why I dropped out of my "Women's Studies" class. Nothing worse than uneducated feminists.

How in the world do I fuck women?????

She's not an uneducated feminist, she's a wilfully ignorant anti-feminist.

I think I fuxxored my comment up. :\

It's just...I've always thought that feminism was about equality, you know? Not pulling out the victim card for everything that goes wrong in one's or male-bashing.

Shutting up now.

I think you misunderstood the conversation. Or I'm misunderstanding your comments.

[livejournal.com profile] laura_holt_pi was claiming all feminism is about is blaming men for everything and painting women as weak. I, and others, were pointing out that she was wrong.

Yeah, I think I misunderstood the conversation. This is why I should keep my mouth shut; I bungle everything up when it comes to socio-political conversations...
