Alrighty folks, I got the function I was asking about earlier working, so now The Prompt Machine can auto-add bands with just the click of a button!

BUT I have to add the bands into the code by hand, and that's BORING AS SHIT, so I'm gonna make it more interesting.

1. How many bands do you think I'll get entered tonight?
2. Will I get around to making the button placement aesthetically pleasing, or just leave 'em in a jumble?

Place your bets. Person who guesses closest, over or under, and gets the second question right, gets a fic. Any characters, any guidelines. If no one gets the second one right I'll go solely on who's closest.

Feel free to entice me by telling me what you'll have me write

Things to keep in mind:
I have coffee, ice cream, and no need to leave the apartment tonight.
I have no class tomorrow, so bedtime is as late as I want it to be.
Entering a band takes about 5 minutes, assuming I have to type in all the members rather than copy/paste, and allowing for getting a little distracted when I'm testing.
I have four fics in progress open in WriteRoom - ie, I won't JUST be entering bands all night
I have no set list of bands I'm choosing from - your number has to come out of thin air

I've posted the question on a couple JavaScript forums I googled up, but I'll pick the brains of the nerdier portion of my flist, too:

I've got a nice getElementsByClassName function working, but my problem is I don't want ALL elements with a given class name, I just want the ones with a blank value attribute.

Specifically, what I want is to:

  1. Find all elements where class="character"

  2. Create an array of those elements where class="character" and value=""

  3. Change the value of the first [x] items in the array to [x] number of variables I've set

I've got 3 all set, but at the moment, since the array includes all the elements, if the first three (I'm working with a group of three right now, but I'll be using this same code for groups of varying numbers) aren't blank it simply skips them and only fills in those which ARE blank.

So I have:

[This input box has a value]
[So does this one]
[(No value)]

{Pretty Button Which Invokes Function}

And I get an array of the input boxes, the function says First Array Item gets assigned a value of "Name 1" if it's blank, Second Array Item gets assigned a value of "Name 2" if it's blank, and Third Array Item gets "Name 3" if it's blank, the code I have now sees that First and Second aren't blank and simply skips them, filling Third in with "Name 3".

What I WANT to happen is for First and Second to be left out of the array, so the first item actually in the array is the blank third box, meaning it'll be filled in with "Name 1".

Is that possible?

(And, uh, lemme know if my explanation is horrible and convoluted and hard to follow)

There were two really nice things about starting work on the prompt machine: One, most of what I needed to know I'd already done for the smut generator and was extremely comfortable with it and two, I knew exactly what it was I needed to learn.

Click for massive amounts of nerding )

So there it is. A site that takes any character lists, chooses two characters at random, adds a prompt that's silly or serious at the user's discretion and, if the user so chooses, assigns a special extra limitation.

God, you guys. I rock so hard.

Remember the Smut Generator?

I got bored again :)

The Prompt Machine.

It's the online version of the crack drabble dice game I posted about a while back. Yaaay crack. But it has normal prompts, too! And limitations! Write a fic where the word count is a palindrome, bitches.

I rock so hard.

Lemme know if you run into any problems, or have any ideas for prompts/limitations/whatevers.

(This was supposed to take all weekend :( Of course, there's plenty I could tweak...)

(Man, I need to find someone who'll pay me for these quicky little fic scripting projects. THEN I'd be set)

Writeup of the process coming, for those of you nerdy enough to get off on that shit (ie [livejournal.com profile] silicondreams)

I FINISHED MY JAVA FINAL OMG

omgomgomg yay

(I didn't finish my research paper, though. Not even CLOSE)

1. Soy Kahlua Iced Coffee Extra Sugar = LOVE. If it were decaf, it'd be the ultimate coffee.

2. The fic I posted a snippet of a few posts ago is now over 8000 words. 8447, exactly. I'm getting seriously hardcore "best thing I've ever written" vibes from this one, folks.

3. So many other people do it, and it always seems like such a good idea, that I finally got around to creating a community for my fic, at [livejournal.com profile] hectorfic. Right now I'm just working on adding everything I've written so far (backdated, so it won't flood flists if you add it), eventually it'll hold bitsies I'm working on and writing babble in addition to finished stuff. So if you wanna read my shit without joining RockFic (although you SHOULD join RockFic, 'cause seriously, it costs less than a cup of delicious soy kahlua iced coffee extra sugar), join it/watch it/whatever. Whee.

4. I'm working on getting stuff rolling for apartment hunting. Nothing's definite yet, but I don't want us to end up in a position where by the time we talk it out and decide what we actually want to do, so much time has elapsed the decision's been made for us. Thanks to everyone who gave us advice, btw. Much, much appreciated.

5. Java is the great Satan.

6. Naptime.

ETA: I lied. You can't backdate in communities. So [livejournal.com profile] hectorfic will be an flist flooder until I finish adding fic. I'll post here when I'm done adding so if you want to wait to add it, you'll know.

I meant to post this on Thursday, but I forgot.

I had a Java test. Wanna know what I got on said test?

100

Word, bitches. Who da man?

I da man.

*cough*

Right.

*sigh* I've been really good about drinking decaf lately, but cafe la france has this awesome Kahlua-flavored coffee that doesn't come in decaf and I've had a few cups. And this morning I forgot to order decaf.

It's interesting. I haven't totally cut caffeine out of my diet - I'm eating a pretty significant amount of chocolate - but every time I have a caffeinated coffee I go through the "OMGSUPERHYPER omgsupercrash OMGcaffeinewithdrawal" cycle. Not so fun. You'd think I'd learn.

Today was my last day at the Y. I think Josh got fired, he wasn't there last week or today, and this week his mail slot didn't have his name on it anymore and he had no time card. :/

It was totally uneventful and insanely draining. Plus the commute home was dreadful. Whee.

I have to do a research project on Piet Mondrian. If you don't know, he's the one who does the paintings that are just black lines and primary colors that are most often victims of the "why the fuck is this art a retarded kindergarten kid with a ruler could do this in five minutes" thing. Whee.

I love his work, though. And my project is going to be kickass. So nyah.

I'm tempted to write it in a hugely unprofessional tone. "Petey, as nobody called him, had a sweet beard, and his wife was pretty hot. A retarded kindergartener with a ruler can easily replicate his paintings. ART ROOLZ. The end."

I wonder if I can muster the energy to go to Shaw's and get some food.

Probably not.

OMGWTF

We had a Java quiz Tuesday. Four essay questions and a little bit of coding.

Essays were no problem. I can handle the theoretical stuff fine.

Coding...ick. Ick ick.

Figured I'd bombed the coding question.

Nope!

Got a 17/20 on that question (and 10/20 on one of the ones I'd thought was no problem, eesh)

83 on the quiz. Yaaaaay me.

(this class is still too hard and I still suck at programming. But there's hope!)
